charlie palmer

a few nights ago i spent a lovely evening at Charlie Palmer at South Coast Plaza. my girlfriends & i were having a very belated birthday dinner for E who i've been friends with since junior high!

for dinner we decided to try the small plates, essentially tapas, that Charlie Palmer had to offer. we ordered the roasted bone marrow with a raisin marmalade, roasted corn guacamole & potato chips, & bacon wrapped blue cheese stuffed dates. we also had the burrata cheese with pesto on grilled bread & the crispy wild mushroom risotto cakes. i had high expectations for the roasted bone marrow, but sadly found it underwhelming. bacon wrapped dates are always a crowd pleaser & the charlie palmer version was no exception.

overall, i had a great time at Charlie Palmer & hope to be back in the near future for some more wonderful food & their refreshing blood orange mojito!

the best meal onboard

tasty airplane food. it sounds like an oxymoron. 99% of the time it is. airplane food has a bad reputation & often for good reason. you're paying $15 for a meal that you wouldn't even normally pay $3 for if only for the sole reason that you weren't stuck in a plane 15,000 miles in the air & hungry as a bear. For some strange reason, I always find myself in an airplane at meal times & when I find myself stuck between two strangers who are both hogging the arm rests and my stomach is ferociously growling because, oh great it also happens to be dinner time, the thoughts crossing my mind at that moment are not often the prettiest. that's when i'm grateful to have packed something to eat for just that very moment.

When it comes to eating a meal on a domestic flight most people have three options, the first option is to purchase a really overpriced sandwich at the airport, the second is to purchase a really overpriced sandwich on the plane and the last option is to impatiently wait to arrive at your destination where you can finally eat a decent meal which usually turns out to be 2 hrs after you initially anticipated because really, when does your luggage ever come out on time? Therefore, the best option which travelers often don't consider is bringing your own food to eat on the plane. I love that this NYTimes article offers meal ideas that sound both pleasing on the wallet & good to eat. When traveling I usually try to bring california rolls or a roasted chicken banh mi, but I'm definitely going to try one of these meal ideas the next time I travel!

DIY coffee table

HairpinLegs_062311_2.jpg
i love the simplicity of this coffee table & it seems fairly easy to DIY !
you can buy new hairpin legs here or find used ones on craigslist or ebay. i'm guessing that the whole project would set you back less than $100 which is a steal for a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture !!

mama & baby bear

summer 2011 nailpolish roundup

my favorite colors for summer 2011........so far. i'm positive that more colors will be added to the rotation in the near future.

alot of women love going to the nail salon & getting a manicure/pedicure, but surprisingly i'm not one of them. i think that i've only gone to the nail salon maybe a grand total of 3 times & all 3 times it was to get acrylic french tips because they just don't look as good when you try to do them yourself at home. i've always loved painting my nails so it never made sense for me to go to a nail salon to have someone else paint my nails with the pink OPI nail polish that i already have at home.

vintage is better than new

i wanted to share a few of my favorite finds from thrifting & going to the long beach flea market over the weekend. in addition to the pictured items i picked up a few bracelets, a 1960's coral colored dress, a vintage dark blue ralph lauren maxi dress, & a long sleeved collared shirt with a great print of horses!

black leather purse- $8

camera bag - $1

vintage 1940-50's pink GE clock radio - $25

sparkling sake

i saw this at trader joe's the other day. don't you love the bottle?? i doubt that the sake itself is any good since trader joe's isn't exactly known to be a purveyor of fine japanese products, but i might buy a few bottles as deocrative pieces.

extreme couponing

i love a good bargain. what i love even more than a good bargain is getting things for free! i've always clipped coupons here & there, but after watching the TLC show "Extreme Couponing" & seeing how people cut down their grocery bill from $1,500 to $10 i started taking couponing more seriously. i realized that i could get products & items that i normally need & use everyday for a fraction of the price that i was currently paying or even get the product completely free! in some cases you can actually make money by getting rebates from the store or the manufacturer !! there are so many ways to get coupons; the traditional way of clipping coupons from the sunday newspaper, printing online coupons, facebook offers, etc. i find it the most helpful to buy at least 2 sunday newspapers, print online manufacturer coupons, print store coupons (target, cvs, rite aid), & print out facebook offers. if the store has their own coupon program, like target for instance, then you can "stack" your coupons. this means that you can use both a manufacturer coupon & a target coupon towards your purchase !!

after clipping all of those coupons storing them can be a hassle & it becomes entirely too easy to lose them. the best way to store your coupons is to buy a binder with clear plastic trading card inserts. the binder will help you to keep track of your coupons & allow you to easily see what coupons you have to use that day.

i've started a spreadsheet to keep track of how much money i've been saving on my purchases & hopefully i'll have saved at least $200 by the end of the year !!

here's a list of some great couponing websites to check out:

this is my shopping haul from yesterday. i got all of them completely free using coupons, store rebates, & manufacturer rebates. the best part is that i'm actually getting $10 back from Rite Aid as part of their rebate program for buying the John Frieda products !!
